Mojo: The AI-Native Language

It's 2024, and the "Python for everything" era is facing a challenge. While Python is great for prototyping, we always have to drop down to C++ or Rust for performance-critical kernels. Mojo, created by Chris Lattner (the mind behind LLVM and Swift), aims to fix this "two-language problem."

Python Compatibility, C Performance

Mojo is designed as a superset of Python. You can import any Python library, but you can also write high-performance code using types and strict memory management.

fn vs def

In Mojo, you can use def for Python-style flexibility or fn for strict, compiled performance.

fn add(a: Int, b: Int) -> Int:
    return a + b

Ownership and Borrowing

Mojo introduces an ownership system that feels like Rust but is more accessible. It uses keywords like borrowed, inout, and owned to control memory.

struct MyData:
    var value: Int

    fn __init__(inout self, value: Int):
        self.value = value

fn process_data(borrowed data: MyData):
    print(data.value)

fn main():
    let x = MyData(42)
    process_data(x)

SIMD and Tiling

What makes Mojo "AI-native" is its first-class support for SIMD (Single Instruction, Multiple Data) and hardware-specific optimizations. You can write a matrix multiplication kernel that is 35,000x faster than Python by utilizing the full width of your CPU's registers.

alias type = DType.float32
alias simd_width = simdwidthof[type]()

fn vectorized_add(a: Pointer[type], b: Pointer[type], res: Pointer[type], size: Int):
    for i in range(0, size, simd_width):
        let va = a.load[width=simd_width](i)
        let vb = b.load[width=simd_width](i)
        res.store(i, va + vb)

In 2024, Mojo is proving that we don't need to sacrifice developer experience for raw power. It's the language that actually understands the hardware LLMs run on.
