App Store Optimization (ASO) Guide 2026: Get Found on the App Store

📋 Table of Contents

70% of App Store discoveries start with a search. ASO is SEO for apps - it determines whether your app appears when users search for what it does. A well-optimized listing can double organic downloads from the same product.

The ASO Ranking Factors

App Store (iOS)

  1. App name (strongest keyword signal)
  2. Subtitle (100 chars - keyword opportunity)
  3. Keyword field (100 chars - invisible to users, direct ranking signal)
  4. In-app purchase names (indexed by App Store)
  5. Reviews and ratings (volume + recency)
  6. Conversion rate (impressions → downloads)

Google Play

  1. App title (strongest signal)
  2. Short description (80 chars - indexed)
  3. Long description (4,000 chars - fully indexed, use keywords naturally)
  4. Reviews and ratings
  5. Install velocity (how fast installs accumulate)
  6. Uninstall rate (high uninstalls hurt ranking)

Keyword Research

Finding the Right Keywords

Tools:

  • AppFollow, AppTweak, Sensor Tower (paid, most accurate)
  • Google Play Console keyword suggestions (free)
  • App Store Connect search trends (free)
  • Manual: search your category and observe autocomplete

Keyword types:

  • Brand: Your app name (protect it)
  • Feature: "expense tracker", "workout planner"
  • Competitor: Target competitor app names (controversial but effective)
  • Problem: "how to track spending", "sleep better app"

Keyword Selection Criteria

Pick keywords that are:

  • Relevant to your app (obvious, but often ignored)
  • Moderate-to-high search volume
  • Lower competition (don't start with "photo editor" - you'll never rank)

Start with long-tail, low-competition keywords to build momentum. Rank on 10 specific queries before targeting one broad one.

App Name and Subtitle (iOS)

App Name format: [Brand Name] - [Primary Keyword]
Example: Monefy - Budget & Money Tracker

The keyword in the name carries the most weight. Don't waste it on just your brand name.

Subtitle: Second-strongest keyword field. Use keywords NOT in your title.
Example: Personal Finance & Expense Log

Screenshots: The Conversion Drivers

Screenshots don't affect keyword ranking, but they directly affect conversion rate (impressions → downloads) - which affects ranking through feedback loop.

Best practices for 2026:

  • First screenshot = most important. Many users never swipe. Show your core value proposition.
  • Use captions. Text overlay explaining the feature shown ("Track expenses in 2 taps")
  • Show results, not UI. "Lost 12kg in 3 months" beats a screenshot of a menu
  • A/B test. Both stores allow A/B testing of screenshots. Run tests for 2 weeks minimum.

Screenshot testing findings:

  • Lifestyle screenshots (showing results/context) often outperform pure UI screenshots
  • Dark mode screenshots perform better for some categories
  • Showing numbers/achievements increases conversion ("10,000+ workouts logged")

Ratings and Reviews Strategy

Why it matters: Rating below 4.0 dramatically reduces conversion. Rating above 4.5 increases it.

Getting reviews:

  1. Ask at the right moment: After a positive action (completed a task, achieved a goal, used the app 5+ times). Never interrupt a core flow.
  2. Use the native review prompt: SKStoreReviewController.requestReview() on iOS shows official in-app review dialog.
  3. Respond to all negative reviews. Reply professionally, offer to resolve. Potential users read these.

Review-begging tactics to avoid:

  • "Rate us to unlock a feature" - violates store guidelines
  • Asking immediately on first launch - too early, user has no opinion

Localization

Localizing your App Store listing (not just the app itself) increases downloads from each localized market by 20-40%.

Localize for each major market:

  • App name (translated, not transliterated)
  • Screenshots with local language captions
  • Description with locally relevant use cases

For Russian-speaking markets: localize for ru, ru-RU, be, uk, kk. These are separate store storefronts.

Icon Design

The icon is the brand. Users see it before anything else.

What works:

  • Simple, recognizable at 60×60px (how it looks in search results)
  • Strong contrast
  • No text (illegible at small sizes)
  • Single focal element

A/B test your icon. Both stores support product page experiments. Even a 5% conversion improvement on your icon compounds over millions of impressions.

Google Play Long Description

Google fully indexes the long description (4,000 chars). Use keywords naturally - this is a ranking factor.

Structure:

  1. Hook (first 167 chars appear before "read more" - most important)
  2. Core features described with keywords
  3. Use cases
  4. Social proof ("used by 500,000+ businesses")
  5. Permissions explanation (builds trust)

Don't keyword-stuff. Google's algorithm detects it and penalizes.

ASO Monitoring

Check weekly:

  • Keyword positions (AppFollow or Sensor Tower)
  • Conversion rate by traffic source (App Store Connect → Acquisition)
  • Rating average and review sentiment

Major algorithm updates happen 3-4 times per year. Watch for sudden ranking drops - may require title/keyword update.
